Towbars were breaking like toothpicks and the supply trailers needed regular towing. Although inexpensive as an individual item, the short lifespan of the towbars in use at Glencore Tahmoor Colliery was that short that replacement costs were starting to rise. This meant that in the long run, cheap wasn’t the best solution. Arex Precision was approached to review the current towbars and assist with a solution. The result was a complete redesign of the towbar within the specific equipment dimensions – Glencore didn’t want to have to change their trailers to fix the towbar breakage issue, they wanted towbars with better lifespans. The new towbar had a removable pintle and reinforcements making it virtually unbreakable. Being able to remove the pintle meant that should the pintle break, the bar could be reused or the other way around, if the pintle broke the bar could be reused. The changes increased the towbar lifespan, resulting in significant cost savings. Glencore simply now needs to keep a few replacement parts on hand for the few breakages that may occur.
